What Is Descaling?

Descaling, or decalcifying, is the process of removing calcium and mineral buildup in your coffee brewer.

After a while, minerals in your water accumulate in your Moccamaster’s brewing element, forming scale. The scale slows down the flow of water – resulting in a longer brew times, and over extracted bad tasting coffee. You might also notice your coffee doesn’t taste minerally from the calcification, or it’s not as hot as you like it.

If you don’t descale at all, your machine might stop working completely.

How Often Should You Descale Your Moccamaster?

Moccamster recommends you descale your brewer when you finish a box of 100 filters. Or decalcify your brewer after every 3 months. Whichever comes first.

Another indication that you should descale your appliance is when the glass tube in the water reservoir becomes cloudy.
