Where Does The Noise Of Coffee Grinders Come From?

The noise of coffee grinders comes from both the motor and the shattering of the beans.

Depending on how the motor was designed, as it runs, it does cause a racket. The din often applies to blade grinders.

When the blades spin, they rotate and pulverize the beans, so the crushing noise is responsible for the racket.

Are All Coffee Grinders Loud?

Not all coffee grinders are loud. Some manufacturers either add sound insulation as a buffering mechanism. Others design grinders with a slow speed (low rpm) to reduce noise.

What Makes A Good Coffee Grinder?

Looking to buy a coffee grinder? Here’s what to consider when purchasing a low-noise grinder.

1. Noise level

Conical burrs have a low rpm compared to flat burrs. It allows them to rotate slowly to not create noise.

Flat burr grinders have a powerful motor, providing good horse work. But they do tend to be louder. But because they grind more quickly than conical burrs, you’d only live through the noise for about 15 seconds.

2. Blade vs. burr grinders

Here’s an overview of the differences between blade and burr grinders.

i) Blade Grinders

Blade grinders crush beans by chopping them. The interaction between the steel and beans does create a more shattering noise. The dicing effect also makes it difficult to get consistent grounds.

Uneven grounds create uneven extraction. When water and the grounds interact, large particles extract slower and smaller ones are extracted faster.

Blade grinders are also more likely to generate heat. The generation of heat does lead to coffee oil’s evaporation, resulting in flavor loss.

ii) Flat burr grinders

Flat burrs have a larger motor. A large motor allows for a high speed, leading to optimum performance. Also, you get a consistent grind due to an enlarged surface area. Because flat burrs grind beans faster, less heat is generated, helping to retain essential coffee oils.

iii) Conical burr grinders

These cone-shaped burrs allow for a uniform but not entirely consistent grind. Conical burrs use low revolutions per minute because of a small motor. The smaller the motor, the smaller the generation of heat.

3. Price

When buying a grinder, it’s best to spend an amount you’re comfortable with. That does not mean you should buy a cheap one for the sake of owning a grinder, but you should be realistic about your budget and needs.

Flat burrs tend to be on the high end of the price range. You can expect to pay anything between $200-$1000 for a decent one.

Blade and conical burr grinders tend to have a reasonable price point. They range between $30-$300.

4. User experience

When looking for a grinder, you also want one that offers ease of use. It’s all well and good to buy a grinder at a high price point, but if it doesn’t give you much flexibility, its use is futile.

When buying a grinder, ask yourself the following:

  • Is it easy to clean? Grounds can be messy. You don’t want a rushed morning because you have to clean your grinder and its surroundings first.
  • Ease of use: How much grind adjustment flexibility does the grinder offer?
  • Is it portable? If you’re a nomad, will you be able to carry it around?
  • Size: Will it fit on your kitchen counter? Or do you have enough space to store it?

5. Grind adjustment

Look for grinders with ease of dialing in your coffee. Some (blade) grinders tend to have a single button. The only thing you have to keep an eye out for is it grinds your ideal size.

If you haven’t figured out the perfect grind for your favorite coffee, it can be frustrating if you don’t know when to stop the machine.

Other grinders have up to 60 settings. While this sounds exciting, it can take some time to figure out the ideal range for your desired grind size.

6. Motor

A slow speed is not a bad thing. It means less noise and less coffee retention because there’s little to no heat generated.

The faster the motor, the more heat is generated. Especially when it comes to blade grinders. Flat burrs have large motors. Less heat gets generated because of the quick grind time. The short duration doesn’t allow many of the coffee flavors to be retained.

2. The quietest blade grinder: Krups Silent Vortex

Blade grinders are notoriously noisy with a high pitch scream as the blades spin at upwards of 10,000 RPM. On the flip side, they’re cheap! A basic blade grinder can be purchased for as little as $20. The other thing I like about them is the versatility (I probably use mine for grinding spices on curry nights more than I do coffee).

The Krups Silent Vortex is a level up on the no-brand coffee grinders (and the Bodum ones too). Krups have identified that waking up the entire household may not be what every customer wants to do when they want a cup of coffee, so have designed the Silent Vortex with extra accousitc dampening material to address this!

If you’re looking for a quiet blade grinder, this is the best choice.

What we like about the Krups Silent Vortex

  • A versatile 3-in-1 grinder that grinds spices, coffee, and dry herbs.
  • Removable bowl with a storage lid to store freshly ground beans.
  • Minimal grinding effort – grind beans at a touch of a button
  • Easy to clean. It has a removable and dishwasher-safe grinding bowl.
  • Fast Grind – you’ll be ready to brew up to 12 cups of coffee within 10-20 seconds.

3. The quietest entry-level burr grinder: Breville Smart Grinder Pro Coffee Bean Grinder  (Our Pick!)

The Breville Smart Grinder does a decent job grinding coffee beans for most of your desired brewing methods.

It’s by no means a premium tier grinder, but we LOVE than you can get a quality conical burr grinder at such an affordable price.

This is an awesome machine, and hands-down trumps the Delonghi grinder I’d been using for the last few years. If you want a quality burr grinder, that’s incredibly quiet and super affordable, then the Breville Smart Grinder is the machine for you!

What we like about the Breville Smart Grinder Pro Coffee Bean Grinder

  • Conical burr grinder – minimizes heat generation.
  • Has 60 grind settings to customize your brew.
  • LCD screen to display the grind setting and grind time for the number of cups you’ve selected.
  • “Smart” dosing feature so you can adjust the grind time.
  • Mess-free: has a removable magnetic catch grounds tray.

This is honestly the perfect entry-level grinder that punches well above it’s weight with a large hopper capacity, 60 grind sizes and many features you’ll probably never need. It’s also been on special on Amazon for as long as we can remember for a low $149 USD.

4. The quietest mid-range burr grinder: Niche Zero

If you lean into minimalistic yet practical kitchen appliances, Niche Zero is a brand worth buying. This single-dose grinder not only has a simple, modern design, but it’s also relatively easy to use.

What we like about the Niche Zero

  • Flow control disc to prevent popcorning.
  • Zero grind retention – retains little to no beans so you get the best flavor from the grounds.
  • Easily switch between brewing methods.
  • Visually appealing – beautiful oak trim base with aluminum body.
  • Limitless grind adjustment makes it easy to dial in coffee.
  • Slow grind, resulting in less noise.

5. The quietest professional-level burr grinder: Rancilio Rocky

Flat burrs are typically high-priced and designed for use in a commercial setting. Fortunately, Rancilio designed a model dedicated to the home barista. Rancilio Rocky grinds quickly, silently, and consistently

The reason the Rancilio Rocky is so quiet is twofold. It uses flat burrs which have less interstitial friction, and therefore less noise. They are also LARGE, 50mm burrs. Larger burrs have more inertia, less rattle, and result in a deeper-pitched grinding noise that is less disruptive (and annoying, at least to me).

If you take coffee making seriously at home or are a cafe or office where noise is an issue, then this is the perfect professional-level grinder that is really, really quiet.

What we like about the Rancilio Rocky

  • Compact hopper – holds up to half a pound of beans.
  • Easy lift-off hopper for ease of cleaning.
  • Accurately grinds any size you want.
  • Grinds directly into the portafilter for a messless grind.
  • 50 grind settings.
  • Tall and slim design – it doesn’t take up much of your kitchen counter space.

Conclusion

If you’re an early riser who wants to enjoy a cup of coffee without disturbing others, a quiet coffee grinder is a must-have.

Most of the grinders listed in this post have a low rpm. Low rpm reduces the speed of the motor to minimize the noise generated by the grinder.

The flat burr grinders, like the Rancilio Rocky, grind in less than 15 seconds. This swiftness results in less of a racket and produces a consistent grind.

If you’re in the market for a decent, affordable, efficient, and silent grinder, this post is an ideal place to start.
