What is Bulletproof Coffee?
TLDR: Brew a strong cup of coffee, and then chuck it in the blender with some butter, coconut oil, or MCT oil. Blitz and enjoy!
While this concept may seem odd to those who haven’t tried it, this is an ideal recipe for those trying to stay in ketosis, and also get some easy calories in. The combination of caffeine and ketosis is purported to rapidly accelerate the fat-loss process.
Making Bulletproof coffee with Keurig K-Cups takes all the hassle out of your coffee prep – leaving you stimulated and satiated in no time at all!
Why Drink Bulletproof Coffee?
Reason #1 – Taste!
It tastes delicious.
We know it sounds a little weird, but once you get on it you won’t look back.
The coffee is creamy and low in carbohydrates. What’s more, the fats are the healthy kind – abundant in medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in the form of MCT oil.
Reason #2 – Ketones!
MCT oil boosts ketone production when you’re in ketosis so you’re basically making your energy system more efficient.
The science behind MCT oil’s molecular structure says that it is four times more effective than plain coconut oil in raising ketone levels, giving you sustained energy that is not usually present in weight loss. As someone who has used the Keto plan in the past, lack of energy was one of my concerns
Reason #3 – Caffeine!
Caffeine. Caffeine raises your metabolism, meaning you’ll burn calories while standing still.
It also gives you mental sharpness and clarity. Combine this with the fact that on ketosis your brain operates more efficiently (your brain runs on ketones normally anyway) and we’re onto a winner.
Can You Make Bulletproof Coffee with Keurig K-Cups?
Absolutely! Bulletproof coffee is typically made from ‘brewed’ coffee such as that made with a plunger or drip machine – just like what Keurig provides!
We can use Keurig capsules here, but just need to watch out for a couple of things: we need to make a strong-tasting coffee, with plenty of caffeine but we don’t want too much volume, so make sure to use the smaller 6oz or 8oz setting on your machine.
The perks of doing this with Keurig however, is that the coffee is always delicious, and takes literally seconds to make – with no mess or cleanup!
What Model of Keurig Coffee Machine Are You Using?
Most Keurig machines are designed with two brewing options – to make an 8oz (250ml) or 10oz (295ml) cup of drip coffee. Other machines, such as the K-Cafe, K-Latte, Rivo, and others have additional brewing options which let you extract more or less coffee.
Let’s take a quick look at these:
- If using a Keurig K-Cafe or K-Latte, draw the coffee, then remove the pod and press the lungo button twice to get an extra 220ml of hot water out of your coffee machine – 250ml total.
- If using a Kurig K-SMART you get a lot more control of your brewing options. Now, it depends how strong you like your coffee, but we’d reccomend you go with the 6oz brew option
- If using a Keurig Rivo, then nice! You’re making real expresso coffee. You’ll want to add some hot water to bulk up the 40ml of espresso coffee to around 200ml when adding it into the blender.
- If using a Keurig K-Classic or all other machines, stick with the 8oz pour option to ensure you get a nice strong cup of coffee.
What are the best pods to use for Bulletproof coffee?
Option 1 – Original Keurig Pods:
IMPORTANT: We’ve discovered that the amount of caffeine in a K-Cup varies massively between flavors. We need a high-caffeine coffee to get the optimal health benefits from our bulletproof brew.
We researched into what K-Cups contain the most caffeine, and recommend t following two brands, Deathwish coffee, and Maud’s.
|Brand||Flavor||Caffeine (mg per cup)|
|Death Wish: High Caffeine||A rich, smooth flavor with notes of cherry and chocolate.||420mg|
|Maud’s: Double Caffeine: Dark Roast Coffee||A rich, smoky flavor.||200mg|
If sipping on intensely bold and highly-caffeinated java is your death wish, then this blend will be to your liking. Each pod has about 420mg of caffeine, so expect to consume more than enough to drive you off the ceiling.
Warning: 420mg is a lot of caffeine! If you have a high caffeine tolerance, this will be fine but for those who are caffeine sensitive, you may want to avoid consuming your entire day’s caffeine intake in one potent cup.
2. Maud’s Double Caffeine Dark Roast Coffee
Maud’s is known for delivering the best coffee in the market, and they don’t disappoint when it comes to this blend. This dark roast has a smooth, rich smoky flavor, with over 200mg of caffeine per cup. The coffee is made from 100% Arabica beans and has low acidity.
This is a good medium caffeine option if your find the 420mg of Deathwish’s coffee a little too much (I know I do!..)
Even better, they’re currently offering 15% off all coffee with the link below.
Option 2 – Bulletproof’s own Keurig compatible capsules!
Yes! If you’re already getting some ingredients from Bulletproof.com, then why not try a coffee designed for this very recipe? As a bonus, these compostable espresso pods are made from renewable plant-sourced bioplastics. The Original features distinct notes of cinnamon, plum, and orange with a cocoa hazelnut finish. They are also cheaper than the brand name Nespresso pods. Win-win!
We bought our Ghee and MCT Oil from Bulletproof.com (which we’ll be using in the recipes later on) and gave their coffee pods a try while we were there. We were pleasantly surprised by the taste, price, and love that they are compostable capsules!
Option 3 – Bulletproofs Keto Capsules!
OK, so we got kinda confused looking at the Bulletproof website but ended up buying these instead of the ‘original’ coffee capsules by mistake.
Now these actually have the MCT oil already included in (in powedered form) in the pods so you dont have to do any wizzardry with your blendy later on – easy!
So, to sum things up:
Results – Our top coffee pod choices in 2023 :

Making Your Bullet Proof Coffee with Keurig
Making your Bulletproof coffee with Keurig coffee makes sense, as coffee is full of antioxidants, and the right coffee as a base gives you the lift you require. The reason for the grass-fed butter is, it makes the coffee more creamy and gives you the high-quality fat content that you will need on the Keto diet to kick start your weight loss program. If you enjoy a latte, make a latte instead.
The Brain Octane C8 MCT Oil is the best of all oils because it is totally pure, and when you are trying to reach ketosis, this will help. Don’t worry about the taste as it is flavorless and odorless. The MCT oil has been shown to double your available ketone energy regardless of the diet you are following.
