The Green Pods Nespresso vertuo pop review our complete review of the vertuo pop

Disclaimer: We paid for this machine with our own money (We had to test our reusable pods on it anyway!). This review is not sponsored in any way by Nespresso SA

We recently had the opportunity to test out the Nespresso Vertuo Pop, the newest addition to Nespresso’s line of pod coffee machines. It’s the new kid on the block in Nespresso’s Vertuo range and caught our attention with its sleek design and variety of features.

But it’s not without it’s flaws too.

The drip tray sucks. The spout is too low. and

Why Listen To Us? Well, because we KNOW coffee! In fact, we make our own coffee, coffee machine cleaners, and reusable capsules which we've sold to over 41 countries. Our team ouf experts include Tristan (an engineer), Claire (a food writer) and Richy (a barista). So, whether you're looking for a recipe or repair guide, we've got you covered 💚

Key Takeaways:

I love the splash of color the Vertuo Pop adds to my kitchen. As someone who has too many appliances and not enough room, I’m glad to be able to fix the new slim design discreetly on my kitchen counter. However it’s by no means perfect, and if you make a lot of coffee, the Vertuo Next is still the best option for you.

Pros

  • Smallest countertop footprint
  • Get an additional 72 pods with the Nespresso Welcome offer
  • 7 Fun colors to choose from

Cons

  • Drip tray is annoying and doesn’t attach properly
  • Low height of the nozzle means some mugs wont fit.
  • Louder than the Vertuo Next.
  • Small water reservoir requires topping up often

Recommendation:
If you’re short on bench space, want to save some money (compared to the Vertuo Next), or want to add a pop of color to your kitchen, the Vertuo Pop is the best option for you.

They sell two variations, The Pop Deluxe with the Aerocinno milk frother and the Pop Solo – without. If you don’t a milk frother one already, I’d highly recommend getting this version as you pay about $50 extra to get the frother which normally retails around the $90 mark.

An Overview of the Vertuo Pop

The first thing we noticed about the Vertuo Pop is its size. It’s significantly smaller than its peers, making it an excellent choice for those with limited counter space or looking for a portable option. Despite its compact size, the Vertuo Pop doesn’t compromise on performance. With just a single button, we were able to control the entire brewing process, making it incredibly easy to use.

Another impressive feature of the Vertuo Pop is its compatibility with barcoded Vertuo pods. These pods come in various sizes to accommodate different coffee preferences. The machine automatically recognizes the pod’s barcode and adjusts the brewing process accordingly. This ensures that each cup of coffee it produces is consistent in taste, aroma, and strength.

The design of the Vertuo Pop is both visually appealing and practical. It comes in six different colors, allowing users to choose a machine that fits their personal style or matches their existing kitchen appliances. Additionally, the pop of color on the lid adds a touch of playfulness and uniqueness to the design.

Overall, our experience with the Nespresso Vertuo Pop was a positive one. Its compact size, user-friendly controls, and compatibility with a variety of pods make it stand out among other pod coffee machines.

The Difference Between The Pop Solo, Pop+, and Pop Deluxe:

The Pop Solo, Pop+, and Pop Deluxe are all slight variotions on the Vertuo Pop that may be availible from your retailer.

The Pop Solo
This is the smallest of the 3 versions, not because the design is inherently any different, but because the water reservoir is offset on other models. (This is the model I picked up for testing 🙂

The Pop+
As alluded to above, the Pop+ is exactly the same as the solo but has an offset water reservoir, making is slightly shorter, but also wider.

The Pop Deluxe
This variation comes with Nespresso’s famous Aeroccino 3 milk frother. If you don’t have one already, i’d highly recommend getting this version as you pay about $50 extra to get the frother which normally retails around the $90 mark.

The Vertuo Pop vs Vertuo Next:

The Vertuo Pop does all the same things as the Vertuo Next, but does it in 38% less counter space. You’ll be trading off a smaller water reservoir, and no wifi or bluetooth connectivity, but in return you’ll be able to pick from 5 trendy colors and a lower price tag.

5. Vertuo Pop Capsule Types

The Vertuo Pop is designed specifically for use with Nespresso’s VertuoLine range of capsules, including the Nespresso Vertuo Pop. These pods offer a variety of flavors and beverage sizes, allowing users to enjoy their preferred coffee styles with ease.

The Green Pods Range of vertuo pods for vertuo pop machine

Unlike Nespresso’s OriginalLine capsules, VertuoLine Pods feature a unique barcode technology that enables the machine to read each capsule and tailor the brewing process accordingly. The result is a perfect cup of coffee, automatically customized to suit the specific coffee blend and size in the pod.

In addition to the standard espresso pods, the VertuoLine also offers larger coffee capsules, such as the 12 oz Alto pod, which can be brewed with select VertuoLine machines like the Vertuo Pop and Vertuo Next. This provides users with a range of coffee sizes, from an espresso shot to a full-sized cup.

VertuoLine Pods are available in a wide array of flavors and intensities, catering to diverse preferences. Some of the top-rated flavors include:

  • Odacio: A bold blend with a strong character, perfect for those who enjoy intense coffees.
  • Melozio: A smooth and balanced medium roast, great for everyday enjoyment.
  • Stormio: An intense, dark roast for coffee lovers who crave a bold and robust flavor.

In conclusion, Nespresso’s VertuoLine Pods offer a versatile and convenient coffee experience for users of their VertuoLine machines. The range of flavors, sizes, and brewing options ensures that everyone can enjoy their perfect cup of coffee, anytime they want.

6. Commitment to sustainabiltiy:

“The Vertuo Pop coffee machine is made with 35% recycled plastic. The packaging is made of 99,5% recycled materials.” – This comes straight from the Pop sales page. Nespresso are pulling no punches when it comes to showcasing how this once ‘throw away’ brand has made a U-turn and now fully embraces sustainability as a core part of it’s business.

“By the end of 2022, Nespresso capsules for the Vertuo system will be made out of at least 80% recycled aluminium.”

-Nespresso Website

Again, via the Nespresso recycling program we can see the commitment to reuse even the aluminum in the used capsules back into the production processes.

HOW TO: Vertuo Pop Setup Process

Setting up the Nespresso Vertuo Pop is a breeze. Out of the box, you’ll find that it’s compact, and its minimal design makes it a perfect fit for any kitchen. Once you’ve unboxed the machine, simply plug it in and fill the water tank with fresh, cold water. Additionally, you’ll need to insert a Nespresso Vertuo capsule of your choice.

The Green Pods unboxing the nespresso vertuo pop

We found that the initial setup should not take more than a few minutes, making it an ideal coffee machine for those who want a quick and easy brewing experience. No complicated installation or assembling process is required, which means you can start enjoying your coffee in no time.

Operating Instructions

Operating the Nespresso Vertuo Pop is incredibly straightforward.

Heatup:

Press the button to wake up the machine. It may take 30 seconds to heat up. When ready the light will become solidly illuminated

Brewing:

  1. First, lift the lever on the top of the machine and insert a coffee capsule.
  2. Then, close the lever firmly to puncture the pod.
  3. Once the capsule is in place, press the single button on the device, and the brewing process begins.

The clever barcode system on the Vertuo capsules ensures that the machine adjusts the brewing parameters for each specific blend or size, providing optimal results for every cup. No need to worry about adjusting any settings or buttons; the machine takes care of it all.

During our test, we noticed that the Vertuo Pop heats up pretty quickly, generally delivering a well-crafted cup of coffee in under a minute. The machine also comes with easy-to-understand maintenance instructions, such as regularly descaling and changing the water filter if necessary, both contributing to a prolonged life span and consistently great coffee.

TESTED: Vertuo Pop Performance Evaluation

1. Brewing Quality

Our experience with the Nespresso Vertuo Pop has shown that it consistently produces high-quality coffee. The barcode system on the Vertuo Pop pods ensures that the machine brews each type of coffee with the optimal settings. It extracts the flavors and aromas effectively, providing a satisfying cup of coffee every time. The crema, which is a signature feature of Nespresso Vertuo machines, is also present and adds a rich velvety texture to the brewed coffee.

2. Speed and Efficiency

When it comes to speed, the Vertuo Pop is impressive. It heats up quickly, usually within about 15 seconds, allowing us to start brewing almost immediately after turning it on. As mentioned in this TechRadar review, the machine is also quite efficient in terms of water usage and electricity consumption.

The Vertuo Pop also has an automatic shut-off feature, which turns off the machine after nine minutes of inactivity. This helps conserve energy and ensures that the machine remains safe to use.

Overall, we find the Nespresso Vertuo Pop to be a reliable and consistent performer that delivers on its promise of quality coffee. While it may not have as many bells and whistles as some other machines, its compact size and straightforward user experience make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a simple, easy-to-use coffee maker.

One important feature that stands out is the Centrifusion extraction system, which provides a consistent and high-quality brewing process.

3. Complaints.

Alright here’s what I didn’t like about the Nespresso Pop machine:

Number 1: Stupid Drip Tray design

The drip tray is tiny, but that’s not the problem. The problem is it clips to the machine body with a poorly designed plastic clasp. This doesn’t really attach it, but merely holds it in place while it rests on the countertop.

If you move the machine, pick it up, or a stiff breeze hits in the wrong direction the drip tray will fall off. Annoying.

Number 2. Spout is too low. Grrrr

Obviously, the driving product feature is to reduce counter space, so the engineers tried to make the Pop as small as possible. Unfortunately, this means they’ve lowered the nozzle to the point where most of my coffee cups don’t fit underneath it.

You have to get rid of the drip tray to fit anything underneath – but that’s OK because it’s terrible design means it’s probably fallen off already.

And I don’t think it’s even possible to brew and Alto-size coffee because you’d need to find a coffee cup that’s wider than it is tall. But maybe people like drinking out of a saucepan? IDK?

3. Small water reservoir.

See the table above where I work out how many of each size of coffee you can make from one fill of the water reservoir.

Basically, you’ll only get 1 alto or 2 Mug/Coffee size pods out before you need to refill the tank.

Value for Money

In our evaluation of the Nespresso Vertuo Pop, we found it to be a great value, especially when considering its frequent offers. As the cheapest Nespresso machine, it delivers excellent coffee quality, which rivals that of more expensive Vertuo models.

Vertuo Pop vs. Vertuo Next

The Vertuo Pop does all the same things as the Vertuo Next but does it in 38% less counter space. You’ll be trading off a smaller water reservoir, an annoyingly low spout, and smaller used capsule drawer, but in return, you’ll be able to pick from 5 trendy colors and a lower price tag.

Recommendation: If you want a cute and covenient Vertuo machine and don’t want to break the bank then the Pop is the way to go. Get the Pop+ or Pop Solo if you already have a milk frother, or the Pop Deluxe if you want to make latte-style drinks.

If you make a lot of coffee’s – particularly the Mug and Alto XL size coffees – then you’ll want the workhorse which is the Vertuo Next. It has a bigger water tank, a larger used capsule drawer, and has enough room under the nozzle for larger coffee mugs, so you can brew serious amount of coffee FAST.

Vertuo Pop vs Other Brands

When comparing the Vertuo Pop with similar coffee makers from other brands, we note that this machine offers users several advantages. First, its compact size makes it suitable for those with limited kitchen space, as highlighted in this TrustedReviews review. Price-wise, it is also inexpensive compared to other Vertuo machines.

In terms of coffee quality, the Vertuo Pop delivers rich and smooth coffee that rivals the output from more expensive machines within the Nespresso range, as well as other well-known brands. One thing that sets the Vertuo Pop apart is its use of recycled plastic, making it a more environmentally-friendly choice, as noted in this BrewCoffeeHome review.

However, there are some drawbacks to this machine. The Vertuo Pop has a small water tank capacity, which may not be ideal for those who enjoy multiple cups of coffee per day. It can also be quite loud during operation and can only fit small cups, as mentioned in the same review from BrewCoffeeHome.

When considering other popular coffee machine brands such as Keurig or De’Longhi, factors to keep in mind are the availability of coffee pods, ease of use, and overall build quality. While we find the Vertuo Pop to be a solid choice for entry-level and eco-conscious users, individual preferences may influence your decision.
