Disclaimer: We paid for this machine with our own money (We had to test our reusable pods on it anyway!). This review is not sponsored in any way by Nespresso SA
We recently had the opportunity to test out the Nespresso Vertuo Next – Nespresso’s most popular Vertuo Machine since its release in March 2022.
It’s without a doubt a well-engineered machine, able to crank out a lot of coffee, fast, and all while looking extremely stylish in any kitchen setting.
But it’s not without its flaws too..
It’s noisy – uncomfortably so. And we’ve had a lot of trouble with the ‘simple one-button design (that’s meant to make things simple but really doesn’t.)
Keep reading as I review every detail of the Nespresso Vertuo Next, and explain whether or not it’s the best choice for you!

Table of Contents
This machine is a workhorse. Its large water tank and high spout is exactly what I was hoping for as someone who drinks a lot of the larger Mug and Alto-size Vertuo coffees.
If you’re a fan of the Vertuo coffee capsules (we certainly are) then you’ve got a few options. The Next, the Pop, the or one of their legacy machines like the Evoulo
The Next blows these out of the water.
They sell two variations, The “Next Deluxe” with the Aerocinno milk frother and the “Next Solo” – without.
If you don’t have a milk frother already, I’d highly recommend getting this version as you pay about $50 extra to get the frother which normally retails around the $90 mark.
An Overview of the Vertuo Next
The Nespresso Vertuo Next is a modern and sleek coffee machine that promises a wide range of possibilities, all while having a small footprint.
It is the slimmest Nespresso machine yet, measuring just 5.5 inches wide. The machine is made of 54% recycled plastic and is extremely easy to use, clean, and maintain. It is versatile, allowing you to prepare brews ranging from 0.7 oz to an 18 oz coffee carafe.
The Vertuo Next creates smooth coffee with a brilliant crema every time, making it a worthy contender among the best coffee makers. It offers users the option to get the Aeroccino milk frother alongside it, which is similar in its minimal design and consists of an electric base and the main body that functions to froth the milk.
Additionally, the machine can be connected to the Nespresso App via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which allows for easy customization and personalization of your coffee experience.
The Difference Between The Next Solo, and Next Deluxe:
The Next solo and Next Deluxe are the 2 main variations of the Vertuo Next machine you can purchase.
The Next Solo
This is the smallest of the 3 versions, not because the design is inherently any different, but because the water reservoir is offset on other models. (This is the model I picked up for testing 🙂
The Next Deluxe
This variation comes with Nespresso’s famous Aeroccino 3 milk frother. If you don’t have one already, i’d highly recommend getting this version as you pay about $50 extra to get the frother which normally retails around the $90 mark.
The Vertuo Next vs Vertuo Pop:
The Vertuo Pop does all the same things as the Vertuo Next, but does it in 38% less counter space. You’ll be trading off a smaller water reservoir, drip tray, and capsule holder, but in return, you’ll be able to pick from 7 trendy colors and a lower price tag.
Key Features of Vertuo Next
The Vertuo Next was released on march 2022 as a major refresh to Nespressos vertuo offering, and it brings some attractive features that make it stand out from its peers. In this section, we will discuss some of the key aspects that make the Vertuo Next unique.
1. Vertuo Next Colors:
Another key feature of the Vertuo Next is its array of colors oyu can chose from when you order your machine. Available in 10 variants, including white and cherry red, this coffee machine can fit well into most kitchen settings
Here are the colors available for the Vetuo Next machine:
- Light Gray
- Dark Grey
- Cherry Red
- Premium Black Rose Gold
- Black Chrome
- Deluxe Chrome
- Deluxe Dark Chrome
- Black Chrome
- Matte Black Rose Gold
Our Take: As Henry Ford once said, “You can any color as long as it’s black”. There isn’t much variation here in the Vertuo Next color options, but I am personally a fan of the white. If looking for something more fun, take a look at the color options Nespresso has delivered with the Vertuo Pop.
2. Bluetooth and Wifi Connectivity:
The Vertuo Next comes with Bluetooth and Wif connectivity, allowing it to stay up-to-date with the latest Nespresso offerings for a smooth and consistent coffee experience.
Some benefits of the Bluetooth and Wifi connectivity include;
3. Vertuo Next Reservoir Size:
The Vertuo Next machine comes with a water reservoir that is 1100ml or 37oz in capacity. By comparison, the Vertuo Pop machine has a smaller 25 oz water tank, while the VertuoPlus machine has a larger 40 oz water tank.
Here is a table summarizing the reservoir sizes for the Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Next, and Vertuo Plus machines:
|Machine||Water Reservoir Size|
|Vertuo Pop||0.75L / 25oz|
|Vertuo Next||1.1L / 37 oz|
|VertuoPlus||1.2L / 40 oz|
So the Vertuo Next has a good-sized water tank – larger than many o the other Nespresso models. But what does that mean for you? Well this table below will show you how many coffees you’ll get before you need to refill it
(Did I mention I like tables almost as much as I like Nespresso machines?)
|Coffee Pod Type (ml)||Approximate Number of Coffees Before Refilling|
|Gran Lungo: 150ml||7|
|Double Espresso: 80ml||13|
4. Vertuo Next Physical Size and Footprint
The Vertuo Next coffee machine is quite a large machine. It’s 14.1″ x 5.5″ x 16.8″ in size, and weights only 10.1lb
While it’s footprint isn’t big, it is tall – which makes it feel like it takes up quite a lot of space when it really doesnt.
Here is a table comparing the physical size, weight, and footprint of the Vertuo Pop+, Vertuo Next, and Vertuo Plus machines:
|Machine||Height (in)||Width (in)||Depth (in)||Weight (lbs)|
|Machine||Height (mm)||Width (mm)||Depth (mm)||Weight (kgs)|
5. Vertuo Next Capsule Types
The Vertuo Next is designed specifically for use with Nespresso’s VertuoLine range of capsules. These pods offer a variety of flavors and beverage sizes, allowing users to enjoy their preferred coffee styles with ease.
The smallest brew size is the Espresso size which will extract 40ml of coffee, while the largest Alto XL size will make a 414ml brew.
How does this work?
Unlike Nespresso’s OriginalLine capsules, VertuoLine Pods feature a unique barcode technology that enables the machine to read each capsule and tailor the brewing process accordingly. The result is a perfect cup of coffee, automatically customized to suit the specific coffee blend and size in the pod.
In addition to the standard espresso pods, the VertuoLine also offers larger coffee capsules, such as the 18 oz Carafe size pod, which can be brewed with select VertuoLine machines like the Vertuo Next.
VertuoLine Pods are available in a wide array of flavors and intensities, catering to diverse preferences. Some of the top-rated flavors include:
- Odacio: A bold blend with a strong character, perfect for those who enjoy intense coffees.
- Melozio: A smooth and balanced medium roast, great for everyday enjoyment.
- Stormio: An intense, dark roast for coffee lovers who crave a bold and robust flavor.
6. Commitment to sustainability:
“The Vertuo Next coffee machine is made with 35% recycled plastic. The packaging is made of 99,5% recycled materials.”
– This comes straight from the Next sales page. Nespresso are pulling no punches when it comes to showcasing how this once ‘throw away’ brand has made a U-turn and now fully embraces sustainability as a core part of it’s business.
“By the end of 2022, Nespresso capsules for the Vertuo system will be made out of at least 80% recycled aluminium.”-Nespresso Website
Again, via the Nespresso recycling program we can see the commitment to reuse even the aluminum in the used capsules back into the production processes.
HOW TO: Vertuo Next Setup Process
Setting up the Nespresso Vertuo Next is a breeze. Out of the box, you’ll find that it’s compact and minimal design makes it a perfect fit for any kitchen. Once you’ve unboxed the machine, simply plug it in and fill the water tank with fresh, cold water. Additionally, you’ll need to insert a Nespresso Vertuo capsule of your choice.
Bonus: The Vertuo Next comes with a sample pack of 12 differenct Vertuo caspules so you can figure out which one’s you like!
Our Experience: We found that the initial setup should not take more than a few minutes, making it an ideal coffee machine for those who want a quick and easy brewing experience. No complicated installation or assembling process is required, which means you can start enjoying your coffee in no time.
The only think that needs inserting is the trip tray, and coffee pod of your choice!

Verruo Next Operating Instructions
Operating the Nespresso Vertuo Next is incredibly straightforward.
Press the button to wake up the machine. It may take 30 seconds to heat up. When ready the light will become solidly illuminated
- First, lift the lever on the top of the machine and insert a coffee capsule.
- Then, close the lever firmly to puncture the pod.
- Once the capsule is in place, press the single button on the device, and the brewing process begins.
The clever barcode system on the Vertuo capsules ensures that the machine adjusts the brewing parameters for each specific blend or size, providing optimal results for every cup. No need to worry about adjusting any settings or buttons; the machine takes care of it all.
During our test, we noticed that the Vertuo Next heats up pretty quickly, generally delivering a well-crafted cup of coffee in under a minute. The machine also comes with easy-to-understand maintenance instructions, such as regularly descaling and changing the water filter if necessary, both contributing to a prolonged life span and consistently great coffee.

TESTED: Vertuo Next Performance Evaluation
1. Brewing Quality
Our experience with the Nespresso Vertuo Next has shown that it consistently produces high-quality coffee. The barcode system on the Vertuo Next ensures that the machine brews each type of coffee with the optimal settings. It extracts the flavors and aromas effectively, providing a satisfying cup of coffee every time. The crema, which is a signature feature of Nespresso Vertuo machines, is also present and adds a rich velvety texture to the brewed coffee.
Our Take: The new range of Vertuo machines all have the same brewing mechanism, so there’s no obvious dfference between machines – provided you like the taste of Vertuo coffee
2. Speed and Efficiency
When it comes to speed, the Vertuo Next is impressive. It heats up quickly, usually within about 15 seconds, allowing us to start brewing almost immediately after turning it on. The machine is also efficient in terms of water usage and electricity consumption.
The Vertuo Next also has an automatic shut-off feature, which turns off the machine after nine minutes of inactivity. This helps conserve energy and ensures that the machine remains safe to use.
Overall, we find the Nespresso Vertuo Next to be a reliable and consistent performer that delivers on its promise of quality coffee. While it may not have as many bells and whistles as some other machines, its compact size and straightforward user experience make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a simple, easy-to-use coffee maker.
Alright here’s what I didn’t like about the Nespresso Next machine:
Number 1: Stupid Drip Tray design
The drip tray is tiny, but that’s not the problem. The problem is it clips to the machine body with a poorly designed plastic clasp. This doesn’t really attach it, but merely holds it in place while it rests on the countertop.
If you move the machine, pick it up, or a stiff breeze hits in the wrong direction the drip tray will fall off. Annoying.
3. Water reservoir could be bigger
See the table above where I work out how many of each size of coffee you can make from one fill of the water reservoir.
Basically, you’ll only get 1 alto or 2 Mug/Coffee size pods out before you need to refill the tank.
Value for Money
In our evaluation of the Nespresso Vertuo Next, we found it to be a great value, especially when considering its frequent discount offers. As the cheapest Nespresso machine, it delivers excellent coffee quality, which rivals that of more expensive Vertuo models.
Vertuo Next vs. Vertuo Pop
The Vertuo Pop does all the same things as the Vertuo Next but does it in 38% less counter space. You’ll be trading off a smaller water reservoir, an annoyingly low spout, and smaller used capsule drawer, but in return, you’ll be able to pick from 5 trendy colors and a lower price tag.
Recommendation: If you want a cute and covenient Vertuo machine and don’t want to break the bank then the Pop is the way to go. Get the Pop+ or Pop Solo if you already have a milk frother, or the Pop Deluxe if you want to make latte-style drinks.
If you make a lot of coffee’s – particularly the Mug and Alto XL size coffees – then you’ll want the workhorse which is the Vertuo Next. It has a bigger water tank, a larger used capsule drawer, and has enough room under the nozzle for larger coffee mugs, so you can brew serious amount of coffee FAST.

Vertuo Next vs Other Brands
When comparing the Vertuo Next with similar coffee makers from other brands, we note that this machine offers users several advantages. First, its compact size makes it suitable for those with limited kitchen space. Price-wise, it is also inexpensive compared to other Vertuo machines.
In terms of coffee quality, the Vertuo Next delivers rich and smooth coffee that rivals the output from more expensive machines within the Nespresso range, as well as other well-known brands. One thing that sets the Vertuo Next apart is its use of recycled plastic, making it a more environmentally-friendly choice.
However, there are some drawbacks to this machine. The Vertuo Next has a small water tank capacity, which may not be ideal for those who enjoy multiple cups of coffee per day. It can also be quite loud during operation and can only fit small cups, as mentioned in the same review from BrewCoffeeHome.
When considering other popular coffee machine brands such as Keurig or De’Longhi, factors to keep in mind are the availability of coffee pods, ease of use, and overall build quality. While we find the Vertuo Next to be a solid choice for entry-level and eco-conscious users, individual preferences may influence your decision.
